HEIC is the format iPhones use by default. Apple licenses the decoder, and browsers do not ship it, so a page like this one genuinely cannot read the file. Rather than pretend, here are the four routes that work. Once you have a JPG, the tool on this page will resize, convert or compress it.

Good for

  • iPhone: Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible, for all future photos
  • iPhone: share the photo to Mail or WhatsApp, which converts it to JPG on the way
  • Mac: open in Preview, then File, Export, and choose JPEG
  • Windows 11: install the free HEIF Image Extensions, then open in Photos and save as JPG

Because the decoder is licensed and browsers do not include it. A site that appears to do it is sending your photo to its own server to be converted there.

No. Most Compatible only applies to new photos. For existing ones, share them or export them, which converts on the way out.

No, it keeps the HEIC. Open in Preview and use File, Export to get a JPG.
