PNG is lossless, but it can only preserve what is already in the JPG, compression artefacts included. This conversion is the right move when you need an exact pixel copy, or a format that supports transparency for later editing. It will not repair a JPG, and the file usually gets much bigger.

Questions

Does converting to PNG improve the quality?

No. Whatever the JPG lost when it was saved is already gone. PNG simply stops any further loss from that point on.

Why did the file get so much bigger?

JPG throws data away to be small; PNG keeps everything. A photo can easily grow five times. That is expected, not a fault.

Will it have transparency?

The format supports it, but a JPG has none to carry over, so the result is fully opaque until you add transparency in an editor.
