At a comparable appearance WebP is normally 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG, which is why it is worth converting a whole folder of site images at once. The saving comes from a better compressor, not from throwing away more of the picture.

Good for

  • Speeding up a website or online shop
  • Reducing bandwidth costs on image heavy pages
  • Preparing images for a modern CMS
  • Getting under a size limit without visible loss

Questions

At the same Quality setting it should look the same or slightly better while being smaller. Use the before and after view to check for yourself.

Often not worth it. The gain is largest on big photographic files; a tiny thumbnail may not shrink at all.

Every current browser can. If you need to support something very old, serve JPG as a fallback alongside it.
