One frame out. Stated plainly, not hidden.

JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP. Paste works too.
Choose imagesStays on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
Best keeps PNG lossless, so it will barely shrink. Try High.
A browser hands back the first frame of a GIF and nothing else, so an animation cannot survive this conversion. Hirira labels every converted GIF as a single frame rather than letting you discover it later. For a still GIF, which is most of them outside of memes, PNG is a straight upgrade: more colours and better compression.
Good for
- Still GIFs that should have been PNG all along
- Old graphics from a legacy site
- Taking one frame out of an animation
- Diagrams and logos saved as GIF
Questions
No. Only the first frame is kept, and Hirira marks the file accordingly. Nothing in a browser can write an animated GIF back out.
GIF is limited to 256 colours and compresses poorly by modern standards. For a still image PNG is better on both counts.
Yes. GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, and PNG stores that without any trouble.
