Is anything lost in the conversion?

Nothing beyond what the AVIF had already discarded when it was made. PNG stores the decoded result exactly.

Why is the PNG so much larger?

AVIF is one of the strongest compressors there is and PNG does not compress the picture at all, only the data. A large jump is normal.

Can I shrink the PNG afterwards?

Yes. Lower the Quality setting to reduce the colour palette, or set a maximum file size and let Hirira work to it.
