Capping the longest side is the right way to resize a mixed folder. A landscape photo becomes 1600 wide, a portrait one becomes 1600 tall, and both end up with the same maximum dimension without anyone having to sort them first. Sixteen hundred pixels is large enough for any normal screen and small enough to stop a page being heavy.

Good for

  • A folder of mixed portrait and landscape photos
  • Images for a blog or a shop
  • Photos that are far larger than they need to be
  • Preparing a set before compressing it

Questions

Whichever dimension is larger is set to 1600 and the other follows the ratio. Nothing is cropped and nothing is stretched.

It is left alone. Never enlarge is on by default, because enlarging invents detail that was never captured.

For most web use, yes. Go to 1920 if the image is a full width hero, or down to 1080 if it will only ever be shown small.
