PDF pages have no transparency of their own, so anything see through in a PNG is placed on white before it goes in. For screenshots and text heavy graphics, set Quality to Best: that stores each page losslessly and keeps the text crisp, at the cost of a much bigger file.

Questions

What happens to transparency?

It is filled with white, because a PDF page cannot be transparent. If the graphic was designed for a coloured background, flatten it yourself first.

Why does my text look soft?

Quality below Best turns each page into a JPG, and JPG is poor at sharp edges. Set Quality to Best for screenshots and text.

Best makes a huge file. What else can I do?

Reduce the dimensions under Size. Halving the width of a screenshot cuts the page to a quarter and usually stays perfectly readable.
